What I am Reading

I just recently finished Nightwalker the first book in the Dark Days Series by Jocelynn Drake. I met Jocelynn Drake when a friend and I were at the Kim Harrison signing here in Cincinnati at our local Joseph Beth Booksellers. She was extremely nice and accommodating to all of us bugging her with questions while we waited to get our books signed. After meeting Jocelynn and learning about her books I went right home and got on Amazon and picked up her first 3 novels. After finishing up another book I was reading I got into Nightwalker. It was a quick read and not the type of story I usually get into. I am a fantasy/sci fi reader normally but after reading some Kim Harrison and Jim Butcher I have ventured into the the paranormal or urban fantasy genre. I am not a huge vampire reader although I will admit I did read Twilight after some pushing from friends.

Nightwalker is told from Mira's POV and she is a 603 year old vampire living in Savannah GA and is often referred to as the "Firestarter" due to her ability to control fire. The story does bring vampires back into their old glory with lots of blood and gore and death. Not really my type of story but I wanted to give it a try to support a local author. Jocelynn does give a good back story and history that goes with her vampires and it was hard for me to like Mira at many points in the story. It isn't my type of story but I thought it was a nice read for a beginning book and I look forward to running into Jocelynn at the RT Convention in Columbus at the end of the month.

The Results of My Nerd/Geek/Dork Test

So to start off my blog I wanted to see if I was a true nerd, geek or dork. The following are my results and it seems I am a bit of all three which is what I thought anyway. According to the quiz maker I am a modern cool nerd. Hmmm it says I am cool which is contrary to everything I have ever believed about myself.

So I now name my blog The Modern Cool Nerdette Blog in recognition of my test results.

I plan to tackle many items including my current unemployment, our attempt at starting a family sans the details of course, the new path of my life and any other nerdy things that come my way.

A brief introduction to me is that I am an unemployed Aerospace Engineer that has just recently been married to a Mechanical Engineer. Yes I feel sorry for our kids to be also! When I returned from our honeymoon I was told that I no longer had a job after only being there for 4 months so it was a bit depressing. After some time to consider what to do I am attempting a life long dream to write a novel. It is definitely not as easy as it sounds!

Here we go! Welcome to my blog and please leave comments and visit me anytime!

Your result for The Nerd? Geek? or Dork? Test...

Modern, Cool Nerd

52 % Nerd, 74% Geek, 48% Dork

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.

A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.

A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.

Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgeable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!

Congratulations!
